Mystcraft is a mod that adds tools for writing books, like those use in the Myst series, which players can use to warp to new worlds and return using Linking Books. Worlds generated by books follow similar rules to the already existing dimensions and world generation, but can be dangerous without being created with a valid combination of Symbols.

Introduction

In the Myst series, there are special books that describe wild and varied new worlds called Ages. These Ages can be written with a special language, and the books they are written in can be used to visit those Ages. Some ages can be beautiful and safe, while others can be inherently unstable and dangerous.

Mystcraft brings the ability to write Ages to Minecraft, allowing players to create and explore wild new worlds for adventure, settlement, or material gain. When playing with such powerful forces, powerful dangers will also be present. Players must always ensure they have a way home, and must endure harsh conditions in unstable ages or learn how to write safer ages to inhabit.

Details

The defining element of the Myst series was the presence of Descriptive Books that could teleport someone to entirely new Ages, by touching a Linking Panel on the first page. The properties of these worlds were determined by what was written in the book; while this process is only hinted at in the series (a closely guarded secret even in D'ni culture), this mod emulates this using descriptive Symbols to control a Descriptive Book's world before it is used for the first time. Symbols can be found in small shrines lined with books while visiting Ages.

However, linking to an untested Age is inherently dangerous, and returning home requires a Linking Book to be created in advance. To create either a Linking Book or a Descriptive Book you must first craft a Linking Panel using a Ink Mixer. Linking Books can't be used to link to a location in the same world or Age, though you can simply link to another Age and make a set of Linking Books as a fast-travel hub.

Creating a Descriptive Book will require a Book Binder to combine Leather with Symbols or Pages. Paper placed in the interface will convert it into Pages, which are only used by Mystcraft. Once at least one Leather, one Linking Panel and as many Pages or symbols as desired are in the interface, a Descriptive Book can be created. Once the Age has been visited, its pages cannot be altered. Ages with no Symbols will be generated randomly.

Once you have access to Ages, you can find cobblestone Libraries lined with bookshelves and Lecterns with random Symbols. These Symbols are what you need to create custom Ages with more stability. A Notebook can be used to store the pages for later use in a Writing Desk or Book Binder. The bookshelves can be ransacked for free Linking Book material as well...

Writing Desks are the primary tool of any intrepid Writer. A collection of Notebooks and paper can be stored for easy copying of Symbols to individual Pages, practice Notebooks, or pre-bound blank Descriptive Books whose Ages have not yet been visited. Ink Vials will load the desk with enough ink to make 16 copies, leaving the glass vials for re-use.

In addition to the Lecterns found in shrines, Bookstands can be used to place books in a cleaner manner than simply using the book. Linking to books from the inventory leaves the book as an entity on the ground that can be damaged my water, fire, and other attacks until it is picked up or destroyed. If all the books leading to an age are destroyed, there will be no way to link back.
